Let’s begin with the challenges I mentioned that I would be undertaking. Again, I’m not saying I’m going to finish all of these books this year. But I set one more rule for myself and that is I would be reading at least one of the books from these challenges at all time until I finish them all. 😀 Twelve challenges, here are the first three.
Get Lost in a Series
Get lost in a character or another world.
Rereading the first five books of “A Song of Ice and Fire” – George R.R. Martin
(A Game of Thrones, A Clash of Kings, A Storm of Swords, A Feast for Crows, A Dance with Dragons)
I’ve planned this a long time ago, I decided to reread the series after the final season. I have a feeling that after the final season, I might need the books to remind me that I actually love this epic story. I can’t believe that after 8 seasons and almost a decade, we still haven’t got the 6th book!? Will I even live to see the day? That remains to be seen.
Explore a Genre
Explore books from the same genre.
I choose horror cos it is my favorite genre. It was difficult to choose only five books because I do have a lot of horror books hanging on my shelves.
Crimes of Passion (Hot Blood series, book 9) – edited by Jeff Gelb
Project Hot Blood is coming to an end eventually but we still got five books left.
The Bazaar of Bad Dreams – Stephen King
I am a big King fan, as I’m sure many friends of horror are. I picked up this collection of short stories years ago, themes of morality and the afterlife connecting the stories. Can’t wait to dig into these dreams.
Tales of Mystery and Imagination – Edgar Allan Poe
I’ve always fancied the idea of liking Poe, since he was such an oddball. I’ve read stories inspired by him, also saw a couple of movies and I really enjoyed the eerieness of his style. But I don’t think I’ve ever actually read a Poe story. It’s about time I guess.
American Psycho – Bret Easton Ellis
The movie is one of my favorites of all time, in my eyes it is still Christian Bale’s best performance. I want to know whether Patrick Bateman would be just as fascinating on pages.
Grotesque – Â Natsuo Kirino
I’ve read one book from Natsuo Kirino before and I loved the detailed descriptions of every gruesome acts. ‘Grotesque’ is about Tokyo prostitutes Yuriko and Kazue who have been brutally murdered, I’m expecting the same amount of details and such care in crafting the characters as the previous book.
Be Daring
Try books or genres you think you would never like.
The Husband’s Secret – Liane Moriarty – Chick Lit
I actually have quite a narrow interest in books, and I hardly ever read books from a genre ‘chick lit’. Unless it got something else mixed into it, like mystery in this case.
The Martian – Andy Weir – Sci-fi
I’ve seen the movie but I’ve heard that the book is better. Again, I’m not that into scifi books as a genre unless it has horror elements in it. But I remain optimistic that I just might like this one.
The Last Wish – Andrzej Sapkowski – Fantasy
Seems to be a theme, I like my fantasy very very dark, almost horror like. Or like ‘A Song of Ice and Fire’. So I guess ‘The Last Wish’ might just be a good match for me.
Daughter of Smoke & Bone – Laini Taylor – YA
I’ve had my YA phase and I’m pretty thoroughly over them. I just got tired of the repetitiveness. Unfortunately, I purchased quite many books at the height of my phase that I guess I just have to read them and be rid of them.
The Time Traveler’s Wife –Â Audrey Niffenegger – Romance
Again, I am definitely not a fan of romance literature, unless they are kinky. Or has time-travel in them. XD Cos I love the Outlander series, but I guess it’s more of the historical element that I’m intrigued by more than the romance itself. I love historical novels. But let’s hope this one lives up to its very high ranking in the romance section on Goodreads.com.
There we go, the first 15 books chosen. Out of the 15, I already have 14 of them on my shelves, I only have to get ‘The Time Traveler’s Wife’ when the time comes. 😀 Fancy doing these challenges with me? 😛
