Weekly Obsessions

Weekly Obsessions, part 39 – prep, factor and bullet

I was so gonna get this little sucker back on schedule this week and I was going strong yesterday. I opened this post, ready to let it rip, but then I got the worst headache in months. I couldn’t even look at a bright computer screen straight, so writing was so not an option. Alive and well today, so here we go, a little late weekly obsessions.

1. Foodporn fever – meal prep with grilled chicken and veggies

813201613515Whenever I’m feeling a little chaotic, meal prepping soothes me. But at the same time I was lazy af, so I did a meal prep for lazy people. I bought bunch of different veggies like beets, carrots, cauliflower and green beans. All except green beans I chopped into small pieces and chucked them into the oven, slightly seasoned with garlic, thyme, salt and olive oil. I like to fry my green beans, because I like them crunchy even after reheating. As my protein, I bought a whole chicken, already grilled from my local grocery store. I always am amazed by how cheap they are, I get a whole chicken for just five euros. When I get the chicken home, I like to de-bone it. Just get your hands into it, the grilled chicken are always so well-cooked that the meat would just slide off of the bone, making the de-boning really easy, and actually quite fun. A medium size chicken yields approximately 600-700 grams of meat. I made some brown rice too, and a simple tomato sauce by mixing up a can of chopped tomatoes seasoned with garlic, a jar of grilled pepper and some cream and cherry tomatoes. I divided the veggies, rice, sauce and chicken into three lunch boxes, and put the rest in glass containers for dinners. With 1.5 hours of work, I made three lunches and two dinners with some grilled veggies to spare for other dishes. I do like to meal prep. ๐Ÿ™‚

But sometimes when I don’t want to eat the same thing for lunch and dinner, I would make something fast and easy for dinner. Like one evening last week, I was2016-09-08-19-13-00 in the mood for beef and noodles, so I made just that. I bought a small steak, cut them up into slices, marinaded the slices with some sake, mirin and soy sauce, and fried them with a big heap of kimchi. Because I wanted something spicy too. I found a pack of instant udon in my ‘bad carb stash’. I made the udon noodles and mixed in some serious chili sauce. I’m obsessed with this particular brand of chili sauce called Lao Gan Ma, which means ‘Old Godmother’. I love love love there crispy soy chili sauce, I could practically eat it with anything everyday. But mostly I love it with my noodles.

2. Cultural Crusade – Masters of Sex, The X Factor UK, Me Before You, The Ones Below, TMNT: Out of the Shadows

Masters of Sex season four premiered a while ago, and I watched the first episode last week. For those not familiar with the TV show, Masters of Sex is about William Masters and Virginia Johnson, the pioneers at human sexuality research. The first two seasons were phenomenal. It was so interesting to see the struggles and obstacles when something as scandalous and taboo as sex was first being studied. We had come a long way, and it’s thanks to brave people like William and Virginia. And apart from the noble mission, there are of course some delicious drama in this show. The third season was a little weak, like the show didn’t know where it wants to head next, and I’m hoping the fourth season would get us back on track.

I rarely watch talent or singing contests anymore, but the latest X-Factor UKย grabbed my attention when I spotted a semi-famous Finnish artist auditioning for it. She is named Saara Aalto and she is quite a character, may not entirely be in a good way. I might write about it more later, but she is one of the reason that got me watching the show. There are some talented singers auditioning too, my absolute favorite being Christian Burrows, watch his audition here. His heart-breaking song about his little brother who had passed away got me crying like a little baby. And everything that makes me feel that strong will got me watching. Can’t wait to see him in bootcamp!

louisaThen a few movies. I watched “Me Before You“, “The Ones Below” and “TMNT: Out of the Shadows“. First this romantic drama ‘Me Before You’ (2016). I guess it would be so weird for Game of Thrones fans who hadn’t seen much of khaleesi Emilia Clarke outside of her blonde wig to see this movie. I had watched a lot of Emilia’s interviews though, and I know her to be a warm and smiling person, quite different from her character Dany. She has a very expressive face and she laughs all the time. As much as I love the mother of dragons, Emilia is more my kind of gal. So her character Lou in ‘Me Before You’ is much closer to actress herself. Lou is this larger than life creature, cheerful, happy and literally so so colorful. I loved her the second I saw her on screen as a waitress in a coffee shop, telling two ladies to go ahead and have a sweet treat, that they contain less calories if they eat them standing up. ๐Ÿ˜€ Oh and all Lou’s shoes! โค How can anyone not love her? And that’s exactly what happened to the recently paralyzed, always crumpy and pissed Will Traynor, played by Sam Claflin, he couldn’t help but fall for the adorable Lou. I didn’t like Will at all. I understood why he was acting like he was, but he doesn’t need to be an ass about it. But the moment he gave Lou her birthday present, that is the moment Will was approved by me. Cos his gesture reminded me so much about Sir Atticus and his presents for my birthday. It proved that Will paid attention. My reaction upon receiving my birthday presents was pretty much the same as Lou’s. ๐Ÿ™‚ The first part of the movie, I actually really enjoyed. But the ending, while baring so much emotion, seemed very rushed. Like it didn’t want to upset its audience by stretching out the sad stuff. But like John Green wrote in one of his novel, pain demands to be felt. I think it’s a kind of respect for the characters too, a proper sent off. But with Hollywood so eager to please everyone, a great and realistic romance story is hard to come by, even with good source material. I haven’t read the book, and I’m not sure it’s my cup of tea. Because I hardly doubt I would even bother to watch this movie if it’s not for Emilia. Nonetheless, it wasn’t too bad of a romantic drama, I can easily give it a six. But Lou deserves a gold star all by her own.ย My IMDb rating:ย 7 stars out of 10

After the mushy romance, I turned to some thriller, ‘The Ones Below’ (2015). It’s about a couple pregnant with a boy, and a couple their age moved to the apartment downstairs and they were also pregnant with a baby boy. It’s a very well made movie, quite stylish, with slow built up into the wtf-ness that exploded quit brilliantly. But again, it’s the second part of the movie that was quite weak, even predictable. They made the audience trust the female lead Kate a little too much. At least for me, not for a second did I doubt her to be crazy, and I think I would have enjoyed this movie more if it had kept me guessing whether Kate was crazy or not. So in the end, the supposedly big twist wasn’t that surprising anymore. All in all, it’s a sleek little thriller with great performances especially by the two female leads. If you like light thrillers, I warmly recommend this. ๐Ÿ™‚ย My IMDb rating: 6 stars out of 10

Then the latest TMNT. I love the turtles, I grew up watching the brilliant animated series and I was obsessed with an old Nintendo fighting game when I was a kid. My favorite has always been Leonardo. I was highly skeptic but secretly hopeful when they were making the last TMNT live action movie. I got to admit, they looked good. I actually liked the fact that they made them different size and they looked different, so we didn’t need to rely on the color of their masks to separate them. Their different personalities were on steroids and I liked them a lot. What I didn’t like was a sloppy story telling. And I didn’t like Megan Fox as April either. The action was surprisingly good, with Green Arrow, I mean Casey Jones adding some human muscle to the bunch. But like the first one, it’s sloppy story telling. It always perplexes me, the amount of money that went into movies like that, how can they not put some dough into the plot. Cos I love the turtles to bits, and would really love to see a decent movie with a solid plot. It doesn’t need to be complicated. I miss the old school action/adventure movies with the heroes having one simple goal that’s clear from the beginning. The rest? Leave it up to our charismatic heroes in half-shells to steer the show. And find a better April ffs. I’ve always imagined her to be slightly geeky and red-haired. So NOT Megan Fox. Someone like Jennifer Lawrence. Or Emma Stone. Or a nerd-favorite, Felicia Day. If you call yourself a nerd, but you don’t know Felicia Day is, I’m withdrawing your nerd-badge. Yes, nerd-badge is totally a thing. Anyhoo, I actually liked this second installment more than I liked the first. Who am I kidding, I’m going to continue to watch them, just not in the theater.ย My IMDb rating: 6 stars out of 10

3. Happy Hubbub – bullet journal

I’ve come across something awesome on the world wide web – bullet journaling. It’s apparently a huge thing now, but it’s the first time I heard about it and it sounds all kinds of awesome. It’s like a hybrid between a calendar, a planner, a notebook, a diary and a doodling pad. It’s something that’s missing in my life! I got so excited about it that last week I watched hundreds of videos and articles and pictures about bullet journaling, I ordered my bullet journal online and pens etc with it. I actually drew some plans for my future planner. ๐Ÿ˜€ I’m not going into details too much now, I’m going to talk about it a lot more later when I actually receive the journal in mail. ๐Ÿ™‚

4. Pouty Phenomenon

Last week I was recovering from being a sad kitten, but talking and just being with Sir Atticus helped a lot. The sun won’t shine all the time, and I don’t want it to either. Cos without the rainy days, we won’t know to appreciate the blue sky as much. His story is not mine to tell, but I do want to share my story later, and write about the things that last week brought to my mind about myself. I haven’t decided yet how and when to write about it, but I already know it’s going to be some emo shit. I apologize about that already. ๐Ÿ˜€

5. Sexy Stir

Almost every time we met with Sir Atticus, we would have some more or less kinky sex. Unless it’s a brief meeting like for lunch or if something as nasty as migraines get in the way. But last week we just hanged out. It was normal and odd at the same time. In the end of the night when we were about to go to sleep, He asked whether I was disappointed that we didn’t have sex, and I didn’t have the right words to express that no, I wasn’t. I said that I always felt closer to Him after having sex, and He actually laughed at that, saying that other girls probably think just the opposite. That just hanging out is more of the bonding time. I guess sex isn’t just sex for us kinksters, it reaches to a deeper level. As animalistic and ย brutal our sex might look from the outside, in its core I always think it’s something beautiful. And while sex means submitting for me, not having sex is one kind of submission too. ๐Ÿ˜‰
